Win XP with only SP2 installed. I can't keep it up long enough to determine
any additional particulars. Normal or Safe mode.

Any thoughts?

Upgrade to SP3, if that does not work, time for a fresh install and make
sure you install all updates. On my site, I have a link to the free
Microsoft Security Essentials that you should also use to protect against
malware.

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%
trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of
Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT
fix this!

HOW TO do a clean install of WinXP: See
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps and/or Method 1 in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307

After the clean install, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) and
before using a flash drive or SDCard that isn't brand-new or hasn't been
freshly formatted:

Tip: After getting the computer fully-patched, download/install KB971029
manually: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971029

NB: Any Norton or McAfee free-trial that came preinstalled on the computer
when you bought it will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is
reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the free-trial and download/run the
appropriate removal tool before installing any updates, Windows Service
Packs or IE upgrades and before installing your new anti-virus application
(which will require WinXP SP3 to be installed).

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting

Any thoughts?

Surely ... why don't you describe precisely what you mean by "closes down"?
Are you logging into a user or adminsitrative account, or just booting into
a default user account? What's displayed on the screen?

Turn your ****ing brain on (if you're in possesion of one) and describe what
you're seeing and experiencing.

Wouldn't it be prudent to discover the cause first rather than treating they
symptom?

If, for example, the OP has a defective power supply, or something is
drawing an excessive current causing the power supply to self-protect by
shutting down, no amount of reformatting (why format?) and reinstalling will
be of any use.

PA Bear seems to have a boilerplate response to pretty much any
question. He no longer has to think about what's really happening or
whether his response is actually relevant at all...

The other possible hardware problems are a bad CPU fan, possibly bad ram.

Can you boot from a CD? Or possibly select "last good configuration" at
start?

If not, it sure looks like a hardware problem.

Don't be silly. this is the first time I have to agree with Piggy
because by doing a clean install by reformatting the HD, any
corrupt DLLs or drivers are replaced by proper working ones.
Also, if there are any malwares then these too are destroyed once
and for all. The OP should also be advised to install SP3 and
then stop AUTOMATIC UPDATES because there are not required after
SP3 is installed. Firewall should also be configured in such a
way so that "No exceptions are allowed".

I didn't see piggy's original message because I am allergic to
three letters he/she uses after his name to signify membership of
the Pig Society.

Don't you think you should ask his age first? By prescribing that
drug, you will only succeed in getting him heart attack because of
a sudden rush of blood to his unused penis!

You have to take extra special care before recommending anything
like this.

Try Viagra?

Not necessarily. To me it looks like an OS problem and so
re-installation of it will solve the problem in no time.
