Very recently, Spybot S & D did not prevent a recent StartPage Hijack in
a friend's computer running WinXP Home OS.
These were the tools install on her computer at the time .
Spyblaster
Spybot S & D
Adware SE
Kerio 4
Norton AV

After the fact she installed & ran "HiJack This" which did not fix the
problem.
Go figure!?

The only one that help was the latest update from Adware SE.
It detected it & removed it, but only after the infection had occurred.

This is why some experienced users say "StartPage Guard program is a
good & necessary in the war on startpage hijacking".
It prevents it, supposedly.
I was trying to confirm this by posting the query.
