After starting my machine - clicking start and Search my machine simply hangs.

All other responses are fine all other applications and utilities. I can
even search using windows explorer.

Can anyone help?

Reinstall the Search Companion Files:

1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type: %systemroot%\inf , and then click OK.
3. Locate the "Srchasst.inf" file.
4. Right-click the "Srchasst.inf" file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files
that Search Companion uses.

NOTE: You may need your Windows XP CD-ROM to finish installing Search Companion.

I have tried this and the machine still hangs when I click on Search - after
the Start button.

Is there any way of reinstalling the Search element without reinstalling the
whole of windows xp.

If I reinstall windows xp will it lose all the programmes I have installed
already?
