Start Up

My computer, a hp Pavillion laptop, with
Windows XP Home, is running extremely slow at start up. When I just put the
computer into Hibernate, it seems to run at a normal speed. It is when I
shut down completely and re start that the problems begin.
It seems to take ten minutes or longer to get started. A friend suggested
that I had to much info running that I cannot see, and thus the slow start
up. I went to msconfig, but became much more confused. I was concerned as
to what to shut down and what to leave running, so I left well enough alone.

Any suggestions for this neophyte???
