Start-up takes forever

Ive read all the posts on start-up possible help but my
problem is still there. Im running Windows XP-Pro have
plenty of mhz & ghz of hard drive, memory etc, However it
takes forever for my computer to get from the Windows
screen (where the bar loading runs back & forth at the
bottom)and the Sign-on Screen then it takes forever again
from there to the Desktop.
Ive checked the programs running & deleted what needed but
that part isnt bad. Can anyone tell me what could be
hanging it up for so long?
ALSO is there a good system checker that id's parts of old
programs & cleans it all up "ONE THAT IS POSSIBLY FREE TO
DOWNLOAD?"

Try using msconfig to trobleshoot your issue. Sounds like it might help you
narrow down the problem application(s)

Yes, MSCONFIG is good. Try cleaning out the registry using RegCleaner
from www.macecraft.com. It's really good and is free.
