start up slow

when starting window's xp,the window's logo appears on screen with the broken
line going from left to right,it might sit like that for 20 seconds or 20
minutes before starting windows.If i start in safe mode,it takes a while,but
after i can start windows no problem,+maybe no problems for days,then it goes
back to not starting.I've tried system restore which corrects the problem for
a while.I only have a recovery cd of windows,which means starting again?Any
suggestions of what may be causing this? Thankyou
