start-up security issues

How do I manage what applications/programs are loaded at
xp start up time ... what files contain auto loading
apps/programs and how do I identify friend from foe .. I
cam concerned about spyware, etc.
 
Start > Run> MSCONFIG

then go to the far right tab under STARTUP..


Also I would run these programs
AdAware (By lavasoft)
Spybot
HiJackthis
