When I go to adjust the start up resources how do I know which ones that i have to keep for start up? It just seems that there are a lot of items in the start up and I don't know which ones I need to keep.

Windows sets up progs running at startup.. some applications that you may
have loaded will place stuff in startup.. closing them down may result in
lost functionality.. XP does not suffer loss of resources in the same way as
Windows 9x did, so performance increases will be small.. however, XP runs
best with at least 512mb RAM

The other cause of XP running badly is the proliferation of spyware that
manages to install itself.. go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download Adaware,
then run it.. spyware will be removed and you may well see an improvement in
XP generally..
