Start up programs

I thought I would speed up my computer by deleting the items in the start up
folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup,
seemed to work as it cut page file usage from 1.2gig to less than 500mb, but
in doing this ll the programes have gone from the "start - programs" area as
well. The programs are still on the drive (C:\Program Files) but they are not
usable. I have tried a system restore but it tell me that it cant be done.
What have I done?

You screwed up.

You should have changed what is in startup by going to: Start > Run >
msconfig > startup tab and deselected those items you did not want to be run
at startup.

If you can remember what programs were in the \startup folder you simply
re-create the shortcuts. You find the executable in Explorer and drag it to
the location you gave and the shortcut will be re-created.

I have wanted to turn off un-used programs on the start up menu. Which
programs are neccesary, and which ones aren't? I am running windows vista.
thanks.
