start up programs?

As a newbie I have looked at the listing of my startup programs and
wondered if they are all really necessary. Is there a listing
somewhere which would indicate what programs actually are necessary
and also identify programs? I know that some of the programs listed
I'm unfamiliar with and therefore have no idea whether or not to
disable those from the startup list.

One thing nice about XP is that there are no "must have" items on the
Startup page of MSCONFIG. You may have something loading that supports
your added hardware that you want to keep. And if you use them
everyday and want them handy at startup, keep a few programs here too.
Everything else can go.

A search with Google for most items will bring up enough information to
help you determine if they are needed or wanted. A few good sites that
maintain lists of common startup items are:
