On startup into microsoft xp, media player
immediately/automatically runs and literally refuses to be
closed down.

have run norton antivirus and removed spyware

would be most grateful for any ideas to solve this.

Goto Start > Run and type msconfig and hit enter.

Goto the Startup TAB, now look for this
entry "wmplayer.exe" or something similar and uncheck it,
now reboot and enjoy.

If the media is in the start up folder, delete it. I don't know if that will
work, but good luck.
