When starting up my password box is filled with dots. The only way I can
remove them is by pressing "enter" so that I can enter my password. I cannot
"Restore" my system to an earlier date. Sometimes after a power cut I am
told there is a disk error and I am strongly recommended to let check disc
run but it automatically stops itself. My platform is XP HE with MS Office
XP and Panda Titanium 2007 anti virus+firewall. All of these I have tried
re-installing with no luck. Can anyone help to resolve? Problems started
after running defrag after the utility advised me to.

First back up your data to removable media - external hard drive,
CD/DVD-R, etc. Then download a diagnostic utility from the hard drive
mftr.'s website. You will create either a bootable floppy or cd with the
file you download. Boot with the media you created and do a thorough
test of the hard drive. If it fails any physical tests, replace it.

Thanks Malke - I was hoping to avoid the hassle of doing your recommendations
- but if that is the only way.......guess what I shall be doing this weekend?
