start up problem

when turning on my computer. I receive a
WindowXPmessage: "checking on file system C. The type of
file system is NTFS. it then goes on to chekc five discs,
which takes approsimately 10- to 15 minutes. Cannot delete
or stop. cannot access windows.can anyone help?
