Start up apps

About 3 months ago I saw onTV a program that helped customize windows. It
showed how to shut down all the automatic programs from uploading on startup.
I did it and it made my system run faster. Now i bought a new system and i
forgot how to do that. Does anyone know how to stop numerous apps from
starting on startup?
