I need to run "cmd.exe" in order to reconfigure my Dell Desktop to
communicate with a Linksys Wireless Router and DSL connection (BellSouth on
Westell Wirespeed). I have XP Home Edition with SP2 on the Dell. I went
through this procedure 6 months ago without any problems when I enabled
ethernet cable connections to the same router from my Dell Desktop and
Thinkpad T21 (running Win2000), but my computers lost router functionality
when I attempted to configure the T21 with a wireless-B notebook adapter.
I am encountering one of two problems when I attempt to run "cmd.exe" on the
Dell Desktop (start-run-cmd)
(1) Sometimes, a blank black window opens momentarily and then dissapears.
(2) Sometimes, I get an error box ...
c:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cmd.com
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.

choose 'close' to terminate the application.
How can I get the 'cmd' dos screen to function properly?
