Start of Windows XP programs

When I start my session in Windows XP too many programs get started and that
makes my computer runs slower (It takes around 7 minutes to the CPU, Pentium
M 1.6 GHz, to get completely stopped!!). I've already deleted all the items
in menu Start>>Programs>>Start.

However, I'd like to know how to choose which programs to run each time I
start my session. I knew it for Windows 98 and Windows Me, when life used to
be quite easier. It was like this: Click on
Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>> System Administrator. In Windows
XP these options have disappeared and now I have to bear with many
unnecessary programs that take me several minutes to work.

Does anybody know how to solve this? I'll really appreciate it.

Type msconfig in Start Run. Generally nothing has to be there but some programs may require entries here.
