I fumble fingered somewhere and now when I hit the Start button the Internet
link is gone.

How do I get it back?

Do you mean the shortcut to IE (Internet Explorer), on the upper left of
the Start Menu? If so, click "All Programs", locate IE, and
right-click, click "Pin to Start menu"

The answer depends partly on which Start menu you are using - Classic
Start or regular Start?

Right click Start, Properties...
