When I click on the Start button, there are some programs at the top of
the left column (&Search, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook.) If if
right click on one, I am given the option of starting the function or
removing the button from the list. Where are these items (they're not
really shortcuts) located? In the registry? I'd like to add some things.

To add programs to that list you right click on the program and
select "Pin to Start Menu" from the menu.
