Start menu shortcuts refresh the screen

Never come across this before, My father in laws machine has all of a
sudden developed a nasty habit of refreshing the screen when either of
the following are double clicked: My Computer, My Documents, My Network
places, this is also occuring with the my computer icon on the desktop
as well, this is on a Windows XP pro machine, no changes have been made
recently, I am wondering if this could possibly be something to do with
the user profile(He is the only user on the machine.) Help would be
very much appriciated as he stores a lot of his medical information on
this machine.

Did you try a system restore to before the problem started? Create another
user profile. Does it happen in the new profile? Does it happen in safe
mode?
