Start Menu Question

When I click on the start menu it is a huge list of programs. Is there a way
I can clean this up by putting like programs into a main file category.
Example: All of my microsoft programs are listed separately. Can I create a
fold called "microsoft" and then put all the individual programs into it?
Any help is appreciated.

Yes. Not only can you do this, but it's a very good idea.

Right-click the Start button and select Explore.
Create your folder where you want it and drag whatever shortcuts you
want into it.

Okay, I followed the instructions below and had no problem setting up the
folders. However, I am having problems dragging the programs into the folder.

1. the windows explorer looking window that came up when I right clicked
and wen to explore does not show all the programs that are in my start folder.

2. I went to the start button and tried to drag them there, but there are
either placed above or below the target folder instead of in it.

Can you help clarify this?

Thanks,

David

R/c and select Open All Users and Open and together these make up the Start Menu. Keep them in their respective hierarchies. If you need a folder in one that is in the other then duplicate the folder's name. They'll be merged on Start.

All Programs menu items above the line are in Start Menu folder and below the line in Programs folder (they were seperate menus prior to XP).

There may be a few program shortcuts in another folder.
Most of mine when I right-click the Start button and select Explore
are in C:\Documents and Settings\Alan Edwards\Start Menu\Programs
The others are in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs

I don't see that you need to drag them from the Start button but you
can if you are careful. There is a knack to it,. The first one you
drag needs to be released to the right of the new folder, not in the
same column. Any other shortcuts or folders you want to drag into your
new folder must also be in the column to the right of the folder.
I find it much easier to open it up in an Explorer window as
suggested. You may find it worth while opening up a second window for
your new folder so you can drag easily from one window to 6the other.
