Start Menu question Please

I accidentally left side dragged Wordpad and Notepad to the desktop to
create shortcuts there instead of right side dragging them. I got the
desktop shortcuts but lost the listing of these two programs in the add
programs/accessories list.
To get them back on the add programs list I tried using Windows Explorer and
went to the Start menu folder/accessories sub folder and copied the desktop
shortcuts and pasted them in there. They show up on the add programs list
normally now. but for some reason, after closing Windows Explorer and
opening it again, the two icons I pasted in there (Wordpad and Notepad) are
now missing where they showed in the Windows Explorer accessories folder
before. .
Is there some reason for this? I'd like to understand how this process
worked....getting both Wordpad and Notepad back into the add programs
listing. Did I do it correctly, or have I done it incorrectly. I can't
figure out why the programs were showing in Windows Explorer, and not
showing up there now.
Thanks much
Dudley

just put wordpad and notepad *back* in their original place...
then create the shortcuts on your desktop by right clicking and selecting
"create short cut"

don;t know why you have tried complicating matters so much

I've never moved my Notepad and Wordpad shortcuts. I'm finding Notepad in
Documents and Settings\<myaccount>\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

and Wordpad is in
Documents and Settings\All Users\Star Menu\Programs\Accessories.

Suggest trying again using Windows Explorer or my Computer to copy/paste
these shortcuts back into position.

TIP: In the future when you want to duplicate or add a shortcut to the
desktop, try a right click on the item. Then select Send To> Desktop as a
shortcut.

Thank you for replying. My question doesn't ask how to replace the programs
in the add remove section if you read the question carefully. As I have
said, I have already done that through discovering a process that might have
been right or wrong. I'm posting to find out it that process was right or
wrong; that's all. I'm trying to ask a deeper question if I may. If you
notice, I have already replaced the programs that I accidentally took off
the add programs menu .My question asks why the icons, after being replaced
in Windows Explorer, don't appear any longer in the Windows Explorer folders
I pasted them into to get them back into the add programs section. I'm
simply trying to understand why they have disappeared from these folders.

Thank you. I've done that. The programs are back on the add remove menu, but
they have disappeared from the folders I had to put them in to have this
happen. I'm simply trying to understand the "why" of this a bit better.

I found it philo, and thanks again for answering. I was looking in the wrong
tree of folders on Windows Explorer for the programs. They were in the tree
under my name rather than the "all users" tree.
I didn't realize that XP sets up a seperate tree for each user. (I don't go
into Windows Explorer all that much :)
Thanks again

I have it now Sharon; thank you. I was looking in the wrong place in Windows
Explorer. I had missed the "my name" tree all together.
The programs are there under my name in that tree as you said.
Thanks again

ok.....left-button drag-n-drop.....

if the source item, ie- c:\D & S\username\Starmenu\Notepad.exe, is on the
same drive as the destination folder, ie- c:\D & S\username\Desktop\,
then the default op is move dragged file.

if the dest folder is on a different drive, it is copied.

to be sure of what you are doing w/d-n-drop, use the right-button to d-n-
d and the d-n-d context menu will show with the choice of to move, to
copy, or to cancel.

You're very welcome. Glad to hear that you have this sorted now.
