Rather annoyingly every now and then the order of the programs changes.
Anyone know why?

Similarly, I would like to change the order of the programs back to the way
I like it. Anyone how?

Click and drag.

Already tried that. They end up in a collection of programs above the line!

You may drag and drop entries to wherever you would like them.
Alternatively, if you prefer alphabetical order, right-click anywhere in the
list and choose "Sort by Name."

If I try to drag and drop the entry goes above a line. I don't have the
facility to sort by name.

Are we at cross purposes? I am talking about the left-hand panel of the
screen that comes up when you press the 'Start' button.--

I was referring to the Programs list on the Start menu (since you said "the
order of the programs changes"). If you mean something else, sorry for the
confusion.

"Above the line"? Jeg forstår ikke.

Can you explain what you're trying to do, and specifically what
happens?

B

Bill Ridgeway

OK. Thanks.

When you press start you get a list of programs (left-hand panel). The
order in which they appear sometimes change for no apparent reason. I have
three questions.

1 How do they get there (of interest rather than importance)?

2 Why do they change (of interest rather than importance)?

3 How do you change the order (I like alpha order)?

The left-hand panel contains 2 sets of programs. Above the bar is the most
used and is maintained by the system and the rest are the ones that can be
added and moved (or do I have that reversed?). You can get rid of the most
used ones by right clicking on start, selecting properties, customize start
menu, and setting the # of programs to 0.

1 How do they get there (of interest rather than importance)?
right click taskbar->start menu tab->customize->general->number of programs on list->
right click taskbar->start menu tab->customize->advanced->recent documents at bottom->
2 Why do they change (of interest rather than importance)?
most used changes which [6 by default] programs appear.
3 How do you change the order (I like alpha order)?
Make sure you ONLY use your programs in alphabetical order.

Husky,

Thanks.

You said <<3 How do you change the order (I like alpha order)? Make sure you

In short you can't. That's what I thought but I couldn't believe I had just
missed something obvious. Given that you can move items in list of "All
programs" I thought it must be possible also to move these into alpha order.
Is this another example of thanks Mr Gates for something which could have
been made to work better with just a little more thought?

Hello, That area shows the programs that you recently opened. You can change
the number of programs on the list, you can removed them.
When you open a program it will be placed in this list.
I do not beleive that you can rearrange them.
Click on "Start "then move mouse cursor to the user name bar at the top,
right click then open "properties" and from this you can make changes.
Hope this is the area you are interested in making changes.
Take Care.

What you're looking at is a bubble sort based on most used [favorite]. Program you use most is located near the bottom closest to your mouse. How could that be improved ? stick it on your mouse when you hit start ? Democracy in action. instant access to your favorite. Can you say the same about those you've elected ? or that they remained your favorite after the election ?

Course you have to remember that section exists. I went and stuck a desktop toolbar on my status bar. Just need to remember to keep less items on my desktop than can be displayed vertically on screen. I have more favorites than you can stick on the start menu. And those ARE alphabetized.
