Start menu icon arrangement

Periodically, the icons on my start menu (which is XP-style, not classic,)
rearrange themselves in one of several strange ways. I've uploaded a few
screen captures of this in action so you can see what I'm talking about; it's
difficult to describe in words.

Sometimes the left half of the menu remains normal, but the majority of the
time, both halves screw up. I've found that I can temporarily fix this by
going to the Properties menu and clicking "OK", but then it just does it
again later.

I'm running XP Professional (I think--it might be Home) with SP2 installed.

Does anyone have any idea what exactly is happening, and how to fix it
permanently? Temporary solutions are all well and good, but it does this
several times a day, and it's bugging the crap out of me.

The problem is with the "main menu" of the start menu, the one you get
initially when you click the Start button. The "directory tree" area of the
menu is just fine.

My guess is that you r-click on the Start button, select properties, and
then make the settings as you want them.

As I said, that DOES work... but only temporarily. It fixes it for a while,
but it just screws up a couple minutes or hours later.

Perhaps there is some malware at work here?
