"Start => Documents" randomly empty

I'm *seriously* in trouble with some XP issues.

Problems started after having emptied some Temp folders under C:
\Documents and Settings\paolo\ and then de-fragmented the disk.

Now it happens that the "Start => Documents" menu is always empty,
regardless the numerous documents I open and close.

But not exactly: to be more precise, the name of documents I open/
close appears in "Start => Documents" for a brief time and then
disappears. I don't know what action makes them disappearing.
Certainly, none of my actions.

This issue is linked to the other one titled "IE7 troubles with
Favorites" I posted today under internetexplorer.general.

I'm seeking advise.

Hi,
Are you running a third-party security/privacy/cleaning program?

What's running in the Notification Area? What's listed in msconfig> Startup
which might be causing this?

Are recent docs cleared when you
1. Close IE7?
2. Log off
3. Shutdown or restart?

Is there a pattern?

I'd like de-emphasize this problem for now and see if with time I can
identify pattern. Until now I could not.

As soon as I get more reliable details, I'll post this again.

Now must focus on the other ...\Recent\Favorites issue.
