"Start Capture" and nothing happens

I want to move VHS taped material to my computer to work with the videos
various ways. I have a Canon Elura 100 miniDV with an analogue to digital
pass through connected to the computer (VCR out to Elura 100 to pc by 1394
firewire). I've checked and re-checked all connections and followed all
directions to repeatedly. When I hit the "Start Capture" button, nothing
happens except that it becomes gray and the "Stop Capture" becomes active
(until I hit that). The timer never moves from 0:00:00, but the "Size of
video file:" goes from "0" to "5 KB".

Then when I hit "finish" I get: "The video was not captured correctly.
Verify that your video camera and capture device are configured properly."

I've been over and over it through the Canon manual and the Movie Maker help
site. Everything checks, but I keep getting the same result described. Why
wouldn't even the timer run?

thanks

Thank you for the response. I will look at the links first chance.

I wanted to write to let any readers know that I did finally get it to work.
I'm not sure why it started to work. My guess is that within the Canon Elura
100 there is a menu item that must be switched from Av (to) DV "OFF" to Av
(to) DV "ON". I was doing this but realize that I may not have been properly
leaving the menu with the setting saved. That is my best guess as to why I
got finally got it.
