XP sp2 At startup: start button, taskbar, icons will come on for 10 sec, then
go off, then come back on. May do this 3 times or for an hour. If I'm quick I
can start a program, go on the internet etc. I can work thru task manager. I
have updated Windows, ran Ad-aware for spyware, stopped all startup programs,
checked start folder. It's hard to use start button because it's off before
an action is complete. The wallpaper stays on.

Do you get any events that indicate crash in explorer.exe. Clean boot the
system and check if the issue still persists. To do this, follow steps below

1) Download autoruns.exe from http://www.sysinternals.com
2) Run the tool and go to explorer tab, disable any non microsoft items
listed there.
30 Also do the same for internet explorer tab.

reboot and check if the issue still reoccurs.

Does depressing the keyboard Start key (left of Alt key) enable you to
select Conrol Panel, Taskbar and Start Menu? On the Taskbar tab uncheck
Auto-hide the Taskbar.

Hope this helps.

Downloaded and ran autoruns as instructed. Problems still occurs. I get no
errors. The start button, task bar and all icons stay on 10 sec than all off.
They are off 3 sec. All other programs I've tryed run and stay on. Start menu
and control panel go off also. Task manager stays up. thanks....

Auto-hide was unchecked. Pressing the start key will not bring them up. They
are on 10 sec and off 3 sec no matter what. No error msg or any other
indication. Control panel will go off also so I have to be quick,
thanks........Internet explorer will stays on and runs. It will stop for a
monent while processer is busy restarting explorer.exe

I'm not able to look at event logs (blank) I used sys config
utl/boot.INI/Safeboot and start/icons/taskbar came up once and not again.
Display settings are correct.

I had the same problem. I restarted in safe mode, and used system restore.
This fixed it and no problems since then.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I tryed safe mode and recover but current date is only 1 shown. When
I boot in safe mode to the desktop icons blink off. Explorer.exe fails, you
can see that in task manager.

I am dealing with the same exact problem as you. everything down to when I
tried a system restore only one day available. Weird. Have you found a
solution yet?
