Standby Overdose

I have been having this problem for the last few hours. Everytime I choose
to go into standby mode, the computer goes into standby mode twice. For
example, if I choose to standby, my computer does so. The problem occurs
when I make an attempt to get out of standby -- I'm shown the Welcome screen
and after I key in the password, the computer automatically gets back into
Standby mode. The same thing happens when I try to hibernate: it happens
twice.

I have tried using System Restore to try to restore the system to an earlier
restore point but that did not seem to help.

I would be grateful if someone could help me out.
