I know that HP pavilion laptops each have a secret partition hidden between
the boot sector and partition-C. The partition is only 44MB and is visible
only when you run the WinXP setup CD. I've seen it on the HDD of my laptop
and left it there when I reformatted for an installation of WinXP. Hidden
partition is not visible via WinXP's Disk Manager. It can be deleted in
setup if selected. Been told that it plays a role in power management, among
other things.

Perhaps your laptop *had* one of those hidden partitions originally. (Before
you deleted it?)

My Dell laptop, which operates on Windows XP, will no
longer go into standby. It would when I first bought it,
but after it has crashed once and since been reformatted,
it will not let me go into this option. I would really
like to remedy this, so if anyone knows how, please let
me know.

Kristi, Go to Classic Control Panel>Power Options> In the System Standby
Box choose the number of minutes and click
Apply.

Hi!
Check the power option settings.
Check the AGP card, update the driver.

"Will no longer go into standby" and "will not let me go into this". Is the
Standby button grayed out? If so, then it is almost certain that you need
to reinstall your graphics driver, which probably is missing. The driver
that comes with WinXP is very basic, and it does not support Power
Management, i.e. Standby, Hibernation, etc. This is what has got left
behind after the crash and your "reformat". Check in the System
Information, software section to see which driver you have at present.

Start>Run>type in msinfo32 >OK
Syst Info>Syst Smmry>Components>Multimedia>Display

Might as well take this opportunity to get the latest driver from the
manufacturer now. There are other possibilities of a grayed-out Standby,
but this is this first one you should look.
