I've never seen this before, but I just did a reinstall
of XP (my OS did a major crash), and now, when I go to
Shut Down, the Standby/Hibernate option is no longer
available to me. I see it there, but it's grayed out. I
can't find anywhere in Windows settings to activate it.
Is this something that has to be set up in Bios? Any
suggestions?
Thanks,
Henry

I'm having the same problem since one week on an old
machine (PII 350 MHz, PC-Partner board and latest Award
Bios). It used to work, but after re-installation of XP
Pro and installation of all updates, the standby option
is disabled in the "Turn Off Computer" dialog. Standby is
also no longer available in the power options panel.
Playing around with the ACPI and APM options in Bios
didn't help either. No help available anywhere on the web
(except for a post that suggests that my bios might not
be XP-compatible).
Could this problem have been introduced with one of the
latest WinXP Updates ???

I just reinstalled XP on my Dell Insipiron 8200 and have the same
problem. Found this article which suggests it could be due to driver
problems:

It is the case that my graphics driver did not install correctly, so
I'm hopefull that once I get that fixed, the power management will
also be fixed too.
