Standby mode not functioning, driver msg.

I get an error msg on my screen when my puter tries to
go to standby mode. Error msg says "Cannot enter standby
because of Com 1 problem. Driver may have to be replaced."
The puter is one year old and this problem just started
2 weeks ago. I have not added or removed any hardware.
I do not use the machine's internal modem. Am using
an external cable modem to connect to Roadrunner.
I am stumped !
