Standby fails--A7N8X-VM/400 mobo

I just built this:
Antec Case SLK 1650 w/ 350 W. PS
A7N8X-VM/400 mobo
Athlon 3200+ CPU
512 Memory, 2*256
60 GB WD HD
Pioneer 109 DVD
Amptron/Polyview 19" LCD monitor
Microsoft Optical Mouse

AMI BIOS V. 08.00.09
08/06/04
A0007000
ACPI BIOS revision 1003

Everything is great--no flaky errors of any kind, except when I set up
standby--it doesn't work. Weird errors. Can't come out of standby. It tries but
monitor doesn't come on, etc.

Sometimes I get a full screen of explanation (Serious Error) and have to
reboot.

If I remove all power, when power is turned back on computer boots by itself.

Optical mouse stays on when computer is turned off, etc. Comes out of standby
by just moving mouse (Yes, "Resume on PS/2 mouse" is set to disabled.)

I've scanned the last 1000 posts on this ng and didn't find any mention of this
and Google was no help.

Any suggestions? I'm inclined to suspect that this is just a real crappy BIOS
(1) and hope it can be replaced with something much better, but I haven't ruled
out the mobo. Did I buy the wrong mobo?

I have one and it's lack luster at best.
