Standby and Hibernate

I'll keep this short, partic as there are alot of entries on this subject. In
the old days I used to use a 98SE PC. Standby then meant shutting down, but
the machine would switch back on if I pressed a button/pushed to mouse.

Now use a new Dell PC with XP Home (with Service Pack 2 and all latest
updates). Will Standby or Hibernate work? Of course not. I've had this
problem since buying the machine (about 6 mnths ago).

Please note, System Restore is not an option as too may Restore points since
then. Also note, "Power Option Properties": Hibernation enabled. Power
Schemes tab: Home/Office Desk selected; and settings are 20mins, 1hr, 20mins
& 25mins respectively.

Is the problem anything to do with the Screensaver that I use? (I use
Ulead's Screen Saver, and previously used AOL's You've Got Pictures) - or is
it something else?

Regards

What happens when you try to use Standby or Hibernate, Neville?

What happens if you change the screensaver (or don't use one at all)?

What has Dell Support had to say about the problem?

No, STANDBY meant STANDBY. "Nothing" to do with shutting down.
...but
the machine would switch back on if I pressed a button/pushed to mouse.

That's how it should be. However, there is more than one STANDBY mode
(S1, S3), and FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN, whereas wake-up from S1 occurs as
you describe, wake-up from S3 requires a push of the power button.
Now use a new Dell PC with XP Home (with Service Pack 2 and all latest

You've got to tell us what DOES happen. And, do you mean it won't go
into STANDBY/HIBERNATE when you request these from the computer
shutdown dialog, or just automatically, as per Power Options?

If you've had this problem since you bought the computer, then there
wouldn't be much point in trying to solve it by using RESTORE.

Who knows? Just about anything is possible. Try unisntalling these and
see if it helps.

Can't say more until we know what you get when you try to
STANDBY/HIBERNATE. My guess is that if you try these from the shutdown
dialog, they will work. Let us know.

I have a similar problem with my HP laptop. A few months ago, it suddenly
developed the problem that when I try to hibernate, it goes to the blue
screen and says PREPARING TO HIBERNATE. THAT'S as far as it goes...just
continues to say preparing to hibernate. The only way out is to crash the
computer by pressing the power button, then it is totally off. When I want
to turn it back on, it is doing a cold start and defeats the purpose of
hibernate.

I've tried shutting down individual applications to see if one of them might
be causing the issue, but there is no change.

The problem happens about 50% of the time...for example: I try to hibernate
to leave for the train, but it hangs so I crash it. On the train I restart
it, do my work & try to hibernate - which works. It's just a pain that I
can't hibernate effeiciently.

If anyone has a solution, I'd appreciate a response.

Thanks

There was a problem with Hibernation that was corrected in SP3. It also can
possibly create other such problems

Update to SP3 and that problem should be corrected. Download the update from
the MS website (not thru Windows Update) then install it in safe mode. That
should take care of your issue.
