Stand by problem

I have an e-machine and am running windows XP home edition. When my computer
has been logged on to the internet then logged off it will not allow itself
to go on standby. I updated my virus protection and scanned the computer for
viruses and problems and came up with nothing.
 
Make sure your NIC setting is unchecked for "Allow this device to bring the
computer out of standby"

start>run and type

devmgmt.msc

Expand "Network Adapters", then select your NIC and right-click and select
properties, then power management.
