Stand by change

for some reson in the last 3 days my machine when I put it into stand by now
wants me to click a button on a blue screen telling me who I am and how many
programs I have open, to log back on. It used to immediately retrun to whence
it came when I pressed any key or moved the mouse. I now find that not only
do I have to press this button but it has logged itself off the wireless
internet and I have to repair the wireless Network Connection to get it go
back on line. It used to go back online itself after about 10 seconds of
looking. Why has my status changed and how can I get it back to where it was?

vendor...

Hi Shenan.
No I am not aware of doing anything. This has happened over the weekend. On
Firday I would standby and any movement of the mouse or any key would liven
it up again and it would log on in 10 seconds by itself now I have to click
on what looks like an authentic windows screen to which I have seen on
computers with several users and accounts but I have never set up for
different users as I am sole user and administrator. Can I investigate
somewhere if it thinks there is more than one user or account?

Hi Charlie,
try right-clicking on the desktop and choose 'properties'
and go to the 'Screen Saver' tab. Now 'uncheck' the box marked "On resume,
display Welcome screen"

Shenan, I think he means the welcome screen, which shows the available
users, and any running programs for a logged on user.

Sounds like standby is logging him out (or doing something equivalent to
"Switch User").

Charlie, have you added a new user account to your PC recently?

Have you made any changes to your power settings?

Charlie,

I cannot think of any specific reason why your computer would have
changed its behaviour, but what you are describing sounds like the
system is now logging you off when going into standby, whereas before it
didn't, and your wireless connection is being powered off.

I would check for a Malware infection, using an antispyware program, for
example MalwareBytes:

If you have an Antivirus program installed (and I certainly hope you
have) make sure it is fully updated and then run a full scan.

You can control whether windows is allowed to turn off your wireless
connection by going into Device Manager:
(Start => Control Panel => System, select Hardware Tab and click Device
Manager Button).

Under Network Adapters, find your wireless adapter, right click and
choose Properties. Select Power Management tab and then untick the box
which says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

How much RAM? How much free disk space?

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty
your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select Start, All
Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System
Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point. Run Disk
Defragmenter.

Hi Alister and Gerry
I have just been into device manager and have changed the power saving to
constantly awake. There was a tab but i found it under the advanced tab and
under property Power saving mode. I don't know what it was at first as when I
clicked on it it was always awke but it might not have been. Lets see what
happens it sounds promising.
Gerry. It is 1915 here now in the UK and I am off to dinner soon but I will
get into the realms of the unkown tomorrow with your guidance and will let
you know of any outcome.

If you have no joy there again I have just remembered the other
setting that may cause it: "Control Panel" > "Power Properties" > "Advanced
Tab" > Uncheck "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" .
If this IS checked, then if XP was last configured to use the "Welcome
Screen" then it will do so for this function. On reflection, you've
probably seen this and seen to it. It was just a thought. I'd really like
to know that you'd resolved this issue (it seems real annoying, you have my
sympathies).

Bingo Well done Tim that has got......... it I hope? Yes it was ticked and I
know not how but I have just had to do a reformat and reload of Windows so
all sorts of things that I had taken as norm had changed but thanks to the
help of you and your colleagues it looks as though we might have got there.
Thanks to all of you folks who have been kind enough to give advice. All
informative to me if not resolving my issue. Fingers crossed it is now. If
not you will be the first to hear about it!
