Stand By button

On my new HP Pavilion a218uk computer, there is a button
on the shut down menu called "Stand By".
When I press this button the screen message
says "Preparing to Stand By"
The computer then freezes and there is no way of
restarting without pulling the plug and booting up afresh.
Could this button be disabled somewhere and if so, where?
Windows XP Home Edition.
Any help appreciated.

Have you checked your settings. Right click Desktop>>Screensaver>>Power.
