squares in text

When I open some of my text documents which were saved about a year ago in
Word, they come up with all squares. How do I fix this?

I'm using Office XP.
I have since discovered that the problem goes farther--all files made with
office programs are either opening with errors or not opening at all (Word,
Excel, Publisher....). The only files that open without a problem are ones
that I have created recently. All previously saved materials now are not
working.
