square box around mouse / stripes on Windows splash page

Hi,

About 1 out of every 5 times that I run Windows, a small
square appears around my mouse pointer. The square is
grey and it is made up of little stripes. The square can
only be seen when the CPU is processing (the square
flickers rapidly when the CPU is processing).

I am also having another problem, which I think is
related: When I load Windows, there are sometimes stripes
on the Windows splash page. The square around the mouse
problem always occurs when the stripes on the splash page
problem occurs.

I only started having these problems a few weeks ago. I
made no hardware or software changes around the time that
these problems started to occur. I have tried reloading
my mouse and video card drivers but this has made no
difference. I performed a Quick restore but this also did
not help.

Any suggestions?

I am using Windows XP home edition. My computer is a
Compaq Presario 2710CA.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If updating your drivers made no difference, then you are probably have
a hardware failure. I would suspect the video card. Try swapping out
the card with a known-working one and see if that helps. If it does,
then you know you need to replace the original card.

Update your Video drivers. I had that problem once with a flakey set
of ATI drivers. The next version of the drivers cleared it up.
