sql server 2000 and sql server ce are free on which scenarios?

Luminal

greetings

I need to develop an .NET CF application for pocket pc that uses sql
server ce to store data. What are the scenarios that SQL Server 2000 and
SQL Server CE are free to use and distribute to customers along with
applications? What are the restrictions? Where can I find information
about licences of this SQL Servers, and distribuitions packages, etc?

Thanks

SQL Server itself is *never* free to distribute. SQL Server CE can be used
free of licensing cost, if you use it for local data storage only. If your
device uses replication to keep the data in the SQL CE database synchronized
with data in the desktop database, you need a client access license for the
CE device.

I think you'll find this basic information and maybe a link or two in the
newsgroup archives:

Lum,

For licensing rules, see
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/ce/howtobuy/default.asp. Generally, the only
way Sql Server 2000 is free is if you use MSDE rather than Sql Server. (Next
year, SQL Server 2005 Express would be the equivalent.) There is never any
charge for SqlCe, but if it connects to SQL Server, then you must either be
running SQL Server in per-processor mode or you must purchase CALs for each
SqlCe device that connects to it, and this is not free. You can find out
more about MSDE here: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/.
