Greetings --

To deal with issues caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Smiley Central, Xupiter,
Bonzai Buddy, or KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately
(but without understanding the consequences) installed, two products
that are quite effective (at finding and removing this type of
scumware) are Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search &
Destroy from www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions.
It's even possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your
system against most future intrusions. I use both and generally
perform manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.

Additionally, manual removal instructions for the most common
varieties of scumware are available here:

Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware

I use three regularly:
Spyware Blaster
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware

I have a question. Both Spyware Blaster and Spybot use an immunize
feature, i.e. they add a pre-defined list of blocked cookies and
websites to Internet settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Do
these lists cancel each other out, or do they complement each other
(meaning that I get the total combined list of immunized sites)? I
think the answer is the later, but if anyone knows the answer for sure
I would appreciate it.

TIA
Ken

The latter. They complement each other, which is why I use both
in immunize mode. I assume that there's a lot of overlap in the
two, but that each includes a few things the other doesn't, which
is why I run both.
