Though Microsoft Corp.'s new security update package is all about protecting
systems from worms, viruses and spyware, it can't do much about what's
already on computers—and that could pose a problem.

The company is warning users of the Windows XP operating system to check for
spyware before downloading the free massive security update, called Service
Pack 2.

In other words, scan your computer for adware, spyware, malware, viruses,
etc. *BEFORE* you install SP2.

That is not really new.
It was the case with previous Service Packs as well, it is just that
spyware issues are growing partly because of the large number of
unprotected computers.
You should resolve all existing issues before installing updates
including Service Packs.
Spyware is definitely an issue.

Never depend on a patch to resolve pre-existing issues unless the
patch is specifically designed to resolve that issue.
SP-2 is designed to give more protections from Spyware etc, it is not
designed to clean them and thus you still need the appropriate
applications with the computer properly prepared before installing
updates..

Immediately afterwards too.

Yep i noted this several weeks ago. Presumably the name of the eweek
reporter who contributed this was "Captain Obvious"?
