Hello
I have a user running Windows 2000 Professional on our LAN network. He has been the "victim" of many many popups and the like. I suspected spy/adware and used the removal tool available at Spywareguide.com. (I've used this tool before with no trouble). Several items came up for removal and I chose to have them removed. He is now unable to browse the internet and upon restart I am greeted with the message "Cannot find the file C:/WINNT/bxx55.dll" He is however able to access our server and receive email, his only network connectivity issue is web browsing. Ideas? Are the two related...I can't help but think they are

Thanks for any information you might hav

Carrie

Natively you can; Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column, you'll find the path
to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup" directories or from the
registry's "Run" keys.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

or copy msconfig from Windows XP to the "windows" directory

Are you sure it isn't bxxs5.dll? Google for that and you will find removal
instructions. To clear it off a colleague's home (WME) PC I had to use Adaware,
Spybot S&D and HijackThis.

Indeed it is bxxs5.dll. Thanks for the information. Do you think that's what's causing his browsing problems? Either way I'd best remove it, eh

Thanks agai

Yes remove it and get a better Spyware removal tool. If the tool did what it was supposed to do it would have removed the call to the file in your registry as well as remove the file. As for the breakage of your TCP\IP protocol that is a trick that many spyware do. It is one reason I remove the stuff manually that the spyware removal tools find sometimes.
