Was wondering if anyone's heard of this, been affected by it, or more
importantly I suppose--been able to find it and remove it. This all started
a few days ago. I was running Outlook and IE6 and with those two open
attemted to open an Access db. My system froze. I opened Task Manager and
for a couple of seconds only this thing call "Spyfader" showed up, then
disappeared. Nothing at all on Symantec's site on it. I've attempted to
search the internet for info on it, with a variety of opinions....some say
it's hardware-related (nVidia graphics cards), some say it's related to
something being plugged in the USB ports, some say it's a trojan virus, some
say it's nothing at all. Generally, though, the concensus seems to be that
once it's noticed in TaskMgr no one can find it on their system after that,
and no one can seem to get rid of it. I've run a full Norton (Internet
Security 2008) scan, Adaware, Spybot S&D, and purchased SpySweeper and done
a full sweep--and nothing. I'm a bit hesitant to do things like online
banking and such at the present time, am gearing up to slick my C: drive,
reformat, and reinstall my entire system (which, believe me, I would not do
unless I felt I absolutely needed to), but I'm feeling very uncomfortable
abou this. But.......before I do that I just thought I'd check here. Other
question, I guess, is: Is this something I should worry about having
infected my entire home network?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Go to my website http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm download 2
programs, "Remove-it" and "What's live Running now" run Remove-it first then
check your system. If you still see it then run "What's Live RN" that
utility, when finished will generate a log file and save a copy of that file
in the same folder. Send me a copy of that file using the email link on the
bottom of my web page. I will analyze it and send you a fix if it shows
anything.

Go to my website
Hosted on the same site as filthy pornographic material created by
butts, blocks access (according to butts) to reputable malware sites, no
backup of deleted files/data.....

Do you really want to trust something like that?

Thanks Mike. Yes, I am.....it was definitely spyfader. But, I've now run
four major products designed for picking up such things and nothing has
found it, so I guess there's nothing more I can do than that. Hopefully it
is as most articles I've read on it, and not responsible for anything
happening. Pretty much what most people say, and that is that they saw it,
it then disappeared, and that it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Let's
hope!

Well, I'm glad the writer of this "malware" used a name that clarified
its purpose.. Imagine, if they had used a name like MSUpdate.exe or
AVCheck.exe, we might have trouble identifying it as malware. Now, if
we could just convince the authors to name the files
hereiamdeletemeifyouwanttoremovethisvirus.exe, it'd be so much easier to
find and remove such nasties.

On a serious note, when it's found to be a utility associated with some
piece of hardware, we might ask, "Why the $#!t didn't they use a
less-controversial name, or at least explain the utility's purpose
somewhere in their documentation?.
