Spybot - no compatibility mode for XP

In case no one noticed. There is no "compatibility mode" for XP in the
program you all keep recommending we download and use. It cannot be updated
as it locks up over and over again.

Is there a fix for this we're all just supposed to know about? :(

FS...I've been running Spybot for over ayear now on a XP Home Ed. system and
have had no compatibility problems either updating or it locking up the
system. You may need to look at your system config or reinstall. Sorry...but
from the info provided, that's the only advice I can offer.

It sounds like your installation of Spybot has somehow gone awry. I
suggest you completely uninstall it, delete any residual files that it
leaves behind, and then download a new copy and install it again.

You might also want to try AdAware from www.lavasoft.de as an
alternative.

It could be that you have some of the especially noxious spyware on
your machine and it is blocking your attempts to install and use
Spybot.

Good luck

** It doesn't lock up the system. It "STOPS RESPONDING", it itself locks up
when trying to get the updates. Now we're getting the "error updating" and
it doesn't even try. What compatibility mode have you selected? There is
no XP mode to select, just W98, NT and 2000.

** What should I look for in System Config?

$$ We already did that but I can try again.

$$ We already have that one. It misses most things that Spybot always finds
on our 2 W98SE PCs.

$$ How would I locate it?

Spybot isn't very graceful in handling a busy server. When there is an
update, the announcement kicks off thousands of users to retrieve the
update. Instead of timing out and notifying you that the server is busy,
Spybot looks like it is dead and eventually gives you a somewhat bogus
error.

Also, have you installed the RealOne Player? I did that back when I was
using Windows 2000. SpyBot was working for many months just fine, but as
soon as RealOne Player was installed the SpyBot became useless. It couldn't
find a server which meant it couldn't do downloads. Uninstalling the
RealOne Player, cleaning out all remnant files and registry entries, and
uninstalling, cleaning, and reinstalling Spybot didn't help; i.e., whatever
its install did in the registry, Spybot was not hardened to recover from.
Other users encountered this same defect, too. Ad-Aware kept working,
though.

Also, Spybot will sometimes look like it is hung, especially during an
update (and perhaps you configured Spybot to look for updates when it
loads). I can play dozens of games of Solitaire waiting for Spybot to come
back alive. I have never bothered to time the apparent hang, but it seems
like it can last around 5 minutes.

$$ OK... that's possible but it never happened with the other PCs we have
(running W98SE). The updates came down without a hitch. As soon as I hit
the "download" button - in a second or two - the "this program is not
responding" showed. Then the download feature wouldn't even look for the
updates.

from CompUSA). I have Ad-Aware but it misses so many things we feel it's
almost useless.

$$ No. We always have to do it manually - which we do every few weeks on
the older PCs. The SpyBot website goes into Proxy Server stuff when the
updates don't work. I don't know what a proxy server is.

$$ Even when you get the "Program Not Responding" error??? Does it start
to respond again by itself?

Is it a ZIPPED file? It has no file extension and my Ultimate zip can't open
it. What do I have to get to open it? This is what I get when it searches
the net for a program to OPEN it.

Compatibility mode would be NT for XP...its based on the NT Kernal. What I
meant by sys config is check your system for firewalls or anything else that
could interfere with installation...its a long shot.

You could probably locate any spyware by first checking your program files
for folders that look suspicious or that you cannot recall ever installing
and maybe do a search in your registry if you're very computer savvy that
is. Its a start.

We got Spybot installed and it finally did download and install the updates.
We chose the NT mode. Now we have to find a way to LOCATE all the
Secret-Crush files - hard since many of the folders Spybot says they're in
do not exist - or if they do we cannot find them - all system files are
showing. We'll now take your advice and search through the program
files....

I am using spybot in Win98 SE and XP Home without update problems -
providing that I select a local mirror for the actual download . In my case
EON(Australia).

If I use the default mirror the download can lockup.

If I leave the default mirror selected, the program ALWAYS locks up for me.
Switching it to another server (in my country - USA) always works for me.

I got a window that said This File can't be opened. I have nothing
to OPEN it with. How do I open and install it?

FS......

Get WinZip, PKZip, ZipMagic, WinRAR, or some other compression archive tool
that will handle .zip files. These are shareware so you are required to pay
for them after the trial period ends. There might be some freebie zip/unzip
tools.
