i HAVE JUST INSTALLED AND RUN SPYBOT SEARCH AND DISTROY. IT APPEARS TO HAVE SEARCHED A DESTROYED WHATEVER ALLOWS ME ACCESS TO MANY OF MY SOFTWARE PROGRAMS. WHEN I CLICK ON VARIOUS PROGRAMS, INCLUDING HELP AND SUPPORT IN WINDOWS XP (HOME EDITION) I RECEIVE THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE: This file doesnothave a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel.

EVEN THE SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY PROGRAM NOT PRODUCES THIS MESSAGE. I SAVED A BACKUP SO I COULD DO A RESTORE FUNCTION IN THIS SOFTWARE BUT WHEN I DO FINALLY MANAGE TO OPEN THE PROGRAM AND RUN A RESTORE, IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

You may have to go into Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types and re-create the associations for given files.

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

Waldo answered your posting, but for the benefit of the rest of the
group, could I ask you nicely to please refrain from posting in all
capital letters? It's the online equivalent of yelling and is
considered rude.

Regards,
Jeff

I have used Spybot Search & Destroy for years (now version 1.3) without
incident. Spybot can remove some files and registry entries that will
disable a few "free" download programs, which are actually "adware/spyware".
But, it does not mess with normal XP functions, like associations, unless
they are pointing to "adware/spyware". I strongly suspect that you had (or
still have) some other problem(s).

many programs [ex: morespace, webstripper] depend on spyware/adware if you run
spybot and all it does is remove the aureate or other things, it will disable
these programs despite the fact they're still on your drive.

If it isn't a call home program [and you can selectively firewall block
outgoing calls] and you can live with the ads, just select ignore when spybot
asks to delete aureate and other ad stuff.

Nice thing about most spy removers, they quarantine to allow you to backtrack
and restore previous settings.

Or you could just attempt to reinstall those programs that are now screwed.
And unless you turned that option off [don't even know if it's available] you
should be able to restore every piece of spyware spybot's ever removed.
