SpyBot and Windows/Microsoft Updates

Alan

Hi all,

There have been many problems reported recently in
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate about downloads
failing as well as the failure of the newest Microsoft update software to
be installed on users PCs. I had this problem, myself, last week.

For many people, including myself, it turns out that the problem has been
caused by SpyBot's Tea Timer being enabled during download and/or
installation from either the Windows or Microsoft Updates sites . This is a
recent problem, as I and others have previously been able to download and
install updates without disabling Tea Timer.

I suppose the pertinent question is why, suddenly, there is this conflict,
and whether it's going to be Microsoft or SpyBot to provide a fix that
enables both the updates and Tea Timer to play nicely as they always have
done?

Alan,

It's a matter of trust.
Teatimer detects changes made to your system. You know MS updates will make
changes to your system. If you are doing updates from MS you should turn
Teatimer off.

I always have Teatimer running when I update the SuperAntiSpyware Program as
I know it is going to try to add a "winlogon" entry which I do not want to
allow.

I always have it running when installing a program that I don't know what
it's going to do. I know that MS updates are going to make changes to my
System and I am not usually qualified to know which to allow and which to
not, so I turn Teatimer off.

As a side note. Your link to:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate
did not do me, as a first time subscriber much good.

I downloaded 900 headers (the default) and tried to do a search for "tea..."
and "spybot..." in whole messages and could find nothing. Could you give
more info,
e.g. date, subject line, author, thanks.

?:)

Never mind,

I did a web search for the group and then "teatimer" and found subject thread:
"Help with Error number: 0x80070020"

?:)

Hi Tim,

I understand what you're saying about the Windows/Microsoft updates making
changes to my system. I'm just wondering why, until now, that I -- and so
many other people who use Tea Timer -- never had problem with Windows
Updates before.

Something seems to have changed, either on Microsoft's part or SpyBot's.

And I'm sorry that the link that I provided didn't automatically add the
Window Update group to your OE newsreader. I thought I had the syntax right,
but I guess I didn't.

Oh, it tried to launch/activate OE!
I quickly killed it.!
I wish people would note when a link will launch a newsreader instead of a
webpage.
I'll forgive you because you did not know :)

I would not use OE unless you paid me the cost of a new computer.
It's one of the reasons my computer is safe :)
It's use has been banned here at work.

When I use a newsreader I use Thunerbird, but as it is the PortableApps.com
version it is not "registered" as the "default".

Pat,

Yes, and no.

I could make Thunderbird my default reader if I had a normal install of
Thunderbird, but since I am using a "portable" version of Thunderbird it does
not inform Windows of its availability as a default option [i.e. it can move
from machine to machine and work fine without changing any of the setting of
the host machine if run from a flash drive].
