Hi

I just installed SP2 and now I cannot add a new network printer
(even if I use the drivers provided with XP) - during the installation
spoolsv.exe starts eating up all CPU resources, and never comes back.

Any suggestions?

Best,
V.

Obtain the latest Windows XP printer drivers from the printer(s)
manufacturer.
There is a trojan that spoofs the real windows file.
"Troj/Graybird-A copies itself to the Windows system folder with the
filename spoolsv.exe and sets the following registry entries so that the
Trojan is run when Windows starts up:"

See http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojgraybirda.html for further
description and removal.

No trojans, the drivers are new - but the problem is still there.

In fact I first tried to install the same printer using Windows XP
driver. It worked - but the driver did not recognized that the
printer could do double-sided printing. So, I went to HP website,
got the most recent drivers - and this is where the problems started.

Now I have removed the HP drivers (to the best of my knowledge), but
it's too late to go back to Windows XP drivers - the problem is still
there, I can't install the printer.
