spooler needs internet?

ZoneAlarms has just started notifying me that the Spooler Server is trying to
access the i-net each time I log on.
The only recent adjustment I made just priot to the first notification of
this is changing my access phone number.
1) why does the Spooler Server want access?
2) should I give it blanket access?
3) why might it have changed from not requiring access to requiring access?
4) is there a likelihood that this is virus-related? If so, how to check
and fix?

I am not sure why it wants access to the internet but I have let it go ahead
and gave it access. Did not hurt anything.
