Spontaneous reboot while gaming :(

Since I've replaced my 2.4Ghz CPU with a new 3.2GHz CPU my system has become
unstable.

First, I had overheating problem:
- idle temp was 55-60 °C
- during a game it was at 80° C but reaching 85°C
I got graphical errors, BIOS beeped and if I didn't quit the game it would
crash and the PC would reboot.

I flashed my mainboard succesfully to latest BIOS version, but that didn't
make a difference, the problem persisted.

Went back to the store, where they replaced the cooling compound and now the
idle temp is 49 °C and during a game it's 60-65 °C.
I can play longer now, no more graphical distortions or BIOS beeps, but
after approx. 20 minutes of gaming the system just reboots spontaneous
without any warning.

After this I get the very informative message "Windows has recovered from a
serious error."

- Is it necessary to reinstall Windows or programs or games after swapping
your CPU?? I've been told that this was not necessary at all...so I didn't do
that.
- Does a Prescott 3.2GHz require more power/voltage from the PSU then my
previous 2.4GHz? (Because I've still a 300W PSU for 3x HDD's, 3x optical
drives, 1x NIC, 1x soundcard, USB keyboard+mouse,...)
- Is this solely a heating issue or is the PSU related?

My system:
P4 3.2GHz (478 socket)
Abit IC7 mainboard
1GB Corsair RAM
3x HDD
3x Optical drives
1x NIC
1x Soundcard
USB mouse+keyboard

Any suggestions are welcome :)

Hi,

Any major hardware change generally warrants a repair installation. However,
I suspect that the previous continuous overheating has damaged the system.
This is not usually repairable, and you may need to replace the motherboard.

After some "research" it seems that only EverQuest2 crashes continously after
the CPU swap.
Unreal Tournament 2004 doesn't seem to have problems, it never crashed since
the CPU swap, so that makes me doubt about the failing hardware, mainboard...
I doubt they would replace my mainboard as all other things appear to
function just fine.

- I already did a WinXP update.
- Installed latest nVidia drivers
- Installed latest DirectX 9.0c
- Scanned for virusses & spyware
- Even reinstalled EverQuest2

I'm totally clueless here, anything else I can try?

Since all other games work well, you are right to assume that this isn't
a hardware problem. There must be something wrong with EverQuest. I
would go to the game mftr.'s site and 1) look for patches; 2) look for
a users' forum.
