spontaneous reboot solved

hello

I haven't posted here with this problem but am posting so that others
may benefit

i have had problems since day one with my winxp sp2 computer taking
minutes to boot, then occasionally rebooting spontaneously on start up.
But it would run for weeks and weeks without any problems - only the
boot up was a problem.

i was told it was grahpics card, or bad ram, or bad power supply. in
the meantime i replaced the hard drive to get a bigger one, removed the
tv card because id didn't use it, replaced the graphics card, installed
a dvd burner ... the crashes kept occuring. I reformatted, reinstalled
everything, then suddenly the crashes would start again ...

after weeks and weeks of trying to sort this out I have finally
narrowed it down to the Canon scanner - if it is plugged in on boot up
the machine gets to the login prompt after many minutes, then
spontanously reboots - the BSOD is bad_pool_call error when i check it.

If i boot without the scanner plugged in it is quick and easy, and I
can plug it in after it is booted with no problems. I read somewhere in
this group about the possibility of an irq conflict related to the usb
ports so I have decided that is it and I am just going to plug in the
scanner when necessary

hope this helps someone else avoid the countless hours I have spent
trying to track this down

You can also check to see if you still have this problem if you install the
correct motherboard chipset drivers and any additional USB filter drivers (VIA
chipsets). The motherboard chipset drivers should provide a IRQ driver.

Thank you for this suggestion - I downloaded the latest motherboard
chipset drivers and they didn't make a difference. But absolutely
everything now works like a dream on this computer - the only thing I
have to do is plug the scanner in when I need it and unplug it when
I've finished, so I am not too worried.
