Spontaneous BE Locking

I have a weird problem with the back end suddenly locking. It seems like one
user suddenly has exclusive access to the data. But none of the users know
how to open in exclusive mode.

We have a multi-user environment (Windows Server 2003) where everyone is
using Terminal Services. The back end resides on the server and each user
has their own TS Profile with a copy of the FE on their desktop. The FE has
an inactive shutdown module set at 15 minutes. We have schedule tasks
running every 15 minutes checking for incoming EDI transactions and uploading
if there are any. This business runs 24/6.

This system has been running smoothly for several years. It is only
recently that we have experienced a rash of sudden lock-outs. Our IT is
looking into possible problems caused by Anti-virus or backups but there
doesn't seem to be anything in Events.

This is not a folder permissions issue as this problem is intermittent. No
one user is consistently the problem.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks - Ali

Would any of the users have the capability/knowledge to open the backend
itself? If they were to open any code-bearing object (are there any??) in
design view that would cause such a lock. Or they might have exclusive access
as the default open mode.

This could be just a bad shortcut (to the back instead of the frontend), a
case of "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing", or a malicious but clumsy
user.

You can check the contents of the backend's .ldb file to identify the user
causing the lock, which might help.

Thanks John but users do not have access to the back end directly plus it is
password protected. Nor could it be a shortcut issue as users do not have
short cuts - they have a copy of the FE on their TS Profile Desktops. And
the Database window is hidden from users in the Front End.

IT Discovered that this issue was caused be a problem with the back up process.
